Wix SEO: A Plain-English Guide to Actually Ranking Your Wix Site

There is a stubborn myth that still does the rounds: that Wix sites cannot rank on Google. It is not true, and it has not been true for years. We build and rank Wix sites for a living, across Kent, Cumbria, and the rest of the UK, so we will say it plainly. The platform is not what holds most Wix sites back. The setup is.

If your Wix site is not showing up on Google, the good news is that the fixes are almost always within your control. This guide walks through what actually moves the needle, in the order we would tackle it ourselves.

First, let us kill the myth

Wix gives you everything Google needs to crawl, understand, and rank your pages. Custom meta titles and descriptions, clean URLs, structured data, image alt text, mobile-responsive layouts, fast hosting, automatic sitemaps, and a direct connection to Google Search Console. The tools are all there.

What Wix cannot do is make the strategic decisions for you. It will not pick the right keywords, write content people want to read, or decide how your pages should be structured. That part is on you (or on us). When a Wix site does not rank, nine times out of ten it is because those decisions were never made, not because the platform let anyone down.

Start with what people are actually searching for

SEO falls apart when it skips this step. Before you write a single page, you need to know the exact words your customers type into Google. Not the words you would use internally, the words they use.

A plumber might think of their service as "domestic heating solutions." Their customers are typing "boiler repair near me." Those are very different searches, and only one of them brings in work.

Spend time understanding search intent. Some people are ready to buy, some are still researching, and your pages should speak to both. Tools like Google Search Console, Google's own autocomplete, and the "people also ask" boxes will tell you a great deal for free. Proper keyword research tools go deeper, but you do not need to spend a penny to make a strong start.

Get the on-page basics right on every page

This is the unglamorous work that quietly does most of the heavy lifting. On every important page of your Wix site, make sure you have:

  • A clear, descriptive page title (the one that shows up as the blue link in search results) that includes your main keyword and reads naturally.

  • A meta description that actually makes someone want to click, rather than a list of keywords.

  • One single H1 heading per page, with sensible H2s and H3s underneath that reflect how the content is organised.

Descriptive alt text on your images, written for a real person, that also happens to help Google understand the picture. Clean, readable URLs. Wix lets you edit the slug, so "yourbusiness.com/boiler-repair-maidstone" beats a string of numbers every time.

Wix puts all of these controls to boost ranking in one place under SEO settings for each page. The settings exist. They just need filling in thoughtfully rather than left on autopilot.

Write content that earns the ranking

Google rewards pages that genuinely answer the question behind the search. That means depth, clarity, and real expertise, not keyword stuffing.

Write for the person first and the search engine second. Answer the obvious questions, then the follow-up questions they have not thought to ask yet. Break text up with headings so it is easy to scan. Use plain language. If you have to use a technical term, explain it.

Thin pages with a few hundred generic words rarely rank for anything competitive. A page that thoroughly covers a topic, from someone who clearly knows their subject, is what Google is trying to surface. Be that page.

Win local search if you serve a local area

For most small businesses, local SEO is where the real enquiries come from. If you serve a specific town or region, this is non-negotiable. you should:

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, fill in every field, and keep it active with posts and photos. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical everywhere they appear online.

  • Create dedicated location pages if you serve multiple areas, rather than trying to make one page rank for everywhere. Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to the ones you get.

  • Google wants to show local users the most relevant nearby option. Give it every reason to pick you.

Sort out the technical foundations

The reassuring part of Wix is that a lot of the technical SEO is handled for you. Sites are mobile-responsive by default, hosting is fast and managed, SSL is included, and sitemaps are generated automatically. That removes a whole category of problems that other platforms can throw up.

Your job is to keep an eye on the things that still matter. Page speed (compress large images before uploading, since oversized images are the most common culprit), making sure every important page is actually indexed, fixing broken links, and connecting Google Search Console so you can see exactly how Google views your site. Search Console is free and genuinely the single most useful SEO tool you can set up today.

Think about AI search, not just Google

Search is changing. A growing share of your future customers will not type into a search bar at all. They will ask an AI assistant and act on whatever it recommends. Optimising only for traditional Google results now leaves enquiries on the table.

The good news is that the fundamentals overlap heavily. Clear, well-structured content from a credible source is exactly what both Google and AI tools want to surface. Get the basics right and you are building for both worlds at once. This is where SEO is heading, and it pays to be early.

Treat optimising Wix SEO for ranking as a habit, not a one-off

The biggest mistake we see is treating SEO as a box to tick at launch. A site that is built and forgotten will drift down the rankings. A site that is monitored and improved, month after month, climbs and stays there.

Check your Search Console data regularly. See which pages are getting impressions but not clicks, and improve their titles and descriptions to win the click. Spot which pages are sitting just off page one and give them the push they need. Keep your content current. Small, consistent improvements compound over time in a way that one big launch-day effort never will.

The honest summary

Wix is more than capable of ranking. The platform gives you a genuinely strong SEO foundation, arguably stronger than most people realise. What it cannot do is the thinking. The keyword research, the content, the local strategy, and the ongoing care all still need a real person who knows what they are doing.

Get those right and your Wix site will compete with anything. Skip them and no platform on earth will save you.
