Fixing SEO issues on Wix: What we (and you) can do

If you want to fix SEO issues on Wix, the trick is not doing “all the SEO things”. It’s figuring out what’s actually broken (or missing), then fixing the high-impact stuff first.

Here’s a straight-talking checklist we use when we’re sorting out a Wix site that isn’t ranking.


1) Make sure Google can actually index your site

Check your pages aren’t set to “noindex”

In Wix:

  • Page settings → SEO basics

  • Make sure “Hide this page from search results” is OFF


Also check you haven’t accidentally noindexed your whole site via advanced settings.


Check Google sees the right version of your site

Pick one:


Then stick with it. Wix generally handles this fine, but issues can happen after domain changes.


Submit your sitemap

Wix auto-creates your sitemap:

Submit it in Google Search Console.


Quick win: If your most important pages aren’t appearing in Search Console → Indexing, you’ve got an indexing problem, not a “keywords” problem.


2) Fix page titles + meta descriptions (this is basic but massive)

Most Wix sites have titles like:

  • “Home”

  • “Services”

  • “About”


That’s basically telling Google nothing.


What to do instead

For each key page, write a title like:

Service name + location (if relevant) | Brand


Example:

  • Wix Website Design in Leeds | The Wix Guys


Meta descriptions don’t directly “rank”, but they help clicks. Keep them human, not spammy.


In Wix:

  • Page settings → SEO basics → Title tag + Meta description


3) Fixing SEO Issues with your Headings (H1/H2) so they’re not a mess

Wix makes it easy to style text, but SEO needs structure.


Rules that generally work:

  • One H1 per page (the main page topic)

  • Use H2s for sections, H3s for sub-sections

  • Don’t use headings just because they “look nice”


Common Wix problem: the logo or random text is set as an H1. Worth checking.


4) Sort your URL slugs (and don’t break old links)

An example of a URL Slug

Wix URLs should be:

  • short

  • readable

  • based on the page topic

Bad:

  • /services-1

  • /blank-3

  • /my-page

Good:

  • /wix-website-design

  • /wix-seo

  • /wix-fix


Important: If you change a URL slug, add a redirect:

  • SEO tools → URL Redirect Manager

Otherwise you lose any existing rankings and links.


5) Stop keyword cannibalisation (a sneaky one)

This is where you’ve got multiple pages trying to rank for the same thing, like:

  • “Web Design” page

  • “Website Design” page

  • “Web Design Services” page…all basically identical.

Google won’t know which one to rank, so it often ranks none of them properly.


Fix:

  • Keep one main page per main keyword/service

  • Merge duplicates

  • Redirect the old URLs


6) Improve internal linking (Wix sites often forget this)

Internal links help Google understand what matters.


Do this:

  • Link from your homepage to your top service pages

  • Link between related services (“SEO” → “Wix SEO audit”)

  • Add “related services” sections on pages

  • Link from blog posts to the relevant service page (not just the homepage)


Aim for: every important page should be reachable within 2 clicks from the main nav.


7) Fix image SEO + page speed (without obsessing)

Wix performance can be great, but people sabotage it with massive images.


Fixes that actually matter:

  • Upload properly sized images (not 6000px wide)

  • Use WebP if possible (Wix often handles optimisation, but don’t feed it monsters)

  • Don’t use 30 full-width images on one page

  • Add alt text for meaningful images (not keyword stuffing)


Alt text should describe the image:

  • “Wix Studio homepage layout example”, not:“wix seo wix seo wix seo”


8) If you’re a local business: do Local SEO properly

An example of the things listed in the Article being displayed on Google search page

If you serve a town/city/area, you need signals.


Checklist:

  • Consistent Name/Address/Phone on the site (usually footer + contact page)

  • A proper Google Business Profile

  • Location-specific service pages only if you can do them well

  • Testimonials, case studies, photos (real trust signals)


Avoid thin “SEO location pages” that are basically copy/paste with the town name swapped. Google’s wise to that.


9) Blog: either do it properly or don’t bother

A Wix blog can be brilliant for SEO...but only if you write posts that match what people actually search for.


Good blog topics:

  • “Wix SEO checklist”

  • “How to add redirects in Wix”

  • “Wix vs WordPress for SEO (honest comparison)”


Bad blog topics:

  • “Welcome to our new website”

  • “Why SEO is important”

  • Anything generic with no real intent behind it


Also: don’t let tag/category pages bloat your index with thin content.


10) Track what’s actually happening (otherwise you’re guessing)

Minimum setup:

  • Google Search Console (non-negotiable)

  • Google Analytics 4

  • Track rankings for your key terms (even with a basic tool)


If you don’t have Search Console set up, you’re basically doing SEO blind.


The fastest plan for fixing your SEO issues on Wix (in order)

If you want the order we usually go in:

  1. Indexing + noindex checks

  2. Titles/meta on core pages

  3. H1/H2 structure

  4. URL slugs + redirects

  5. Merge duplicates (cannibalisation)

  6. Internal linking

  7. Image size + basic performance cleanup

  8. Local SEO signals (if relevant)

  9. Content improvements + blog strategy
